Marrakech Express

Decided to write my first blog post today. Thought I would start with a bit about my time in Morocco...

Short story is, if you get the chance, go to Morocco. It is a totally different assault on the senses to Europe but it is right on the door step. You can get there dirt cheap, by air or sea. An amazing place to visit.

Long story goes, I was in Portugal, planned to head to La Tomatina in Valencia but it was looking expensive and booked out so overnight bused it to Madrid and flew to Marrakesh.

Jemaa el-Fnaa by day

Food stalls by night

A small selection of the delightful eats on offer
It was thrilling to be in such a different place. Finding my riad through the tiny streets and alleyways of the old town was surreal. Donkeys fought for street space with little motorbikes, pedestrians, carts, tourists and some small vans. It was chaotic. From every angle come new sights, sounds and smells. And when the old square comes to life, as the sun goes down, it all transforms into a thriving smorgasbord for the senses again.

Jemaa el-Fnaa square has been the centre of life in Marrakesh for centuries. During the day it is occupied by the various stalls of fresh juice sellers, snake charmers, monkeys. This is the quiet time. At night the entire square is filled with steaming food stalls serving all kinds of foods to quell curious appetites. It is one truly enthralling place to visit. In Marrakesh there are plenty of winding alleys and souks, markets and areas to lose yourself in. It is pure entertainment to sit and eat a meal in that square.
